Chair Professor & Doctoral Supervisor, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He graduated from the University of Notre Dame (USA) in 1994 with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. In 1999–2006, he worked at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, holding successive roles as Assistant Professor (1999–2002), Tenured Associate Professor (2002–2006), and Tenured Full Professor (since 2006).

Selected for a Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) program in 2008, he once served as Deputy Director of CAS Institute of Automation’s State Key Laboratory of Management and Control for Complex Systems (2010–2016).

Since 1992, he has published over 270 SCI papers & 280 international conference papers, and co-authored 13 books. Honors include: 2018 INNS Lifetime Achievement Award, 2022 IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Neural Network Pioneer Award, and Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher (consecutive years since 2017).

Previous roles: Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems, IFAC Council Member, APNNS President. Current roles: Chinese Association of Automation (CAA) Standing Director, Editor-in-Chief of Artificial Intelligence Review.

Elected titles: IEEE Fellow (2005), INNS Fellow (2013), IAPR Fellow (2016), European Academy of Sciences Member (2021).
