Academician Liu Derong's academic career is a model of a scholar with experiences spanning China and the West. In his early years, he laid a solid foundation for scientific research at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). Later, he pursued his doctoral degree at the University of Notre Dame in the United States, and in 1999, he began teaching at the University of Illinois at Chicago, becoming one of the youngest full professors in the university's history and obtaining tenure.

His return to China and dedicated efforts have also made him a witness and promoter of China's rapid scientific and technological development: in 2008, he was selected into a relevant talent program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; from 2010 to 2016, he served as Deputy Director of the State Key Laboratory of Management and Control for Complex Systems; in 2022, he joined Southern University of Science and Technology as a full-time faculty member, continuing to engage in scientific research and education. To date, Academician Liu Derong has published over 270 SCI-indexed journal papers and co-authored 13 academic monographs.
